Shaw Peat System

intro peat

GS Concrete manufactures an innovative system for on-site wastewater treatment. Used in conjunction with a conventional septic tank the Shaw Peat system offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly passive alternative to traditional aerobic secondary treatment mechanisms such as contour fields, sand filters, aeration ponds and jet tanks. Primary applications include difficult terrain and sites where no system exists, or where one has failed.

The Shaw Peat System uses sphagnum peat compacted into concrete tanks measuring 3m x 1.8m x1m. A system of perforated PVC piping near the top of the tank distributes the wastewater flowing from the septic tank across the peat. Treatment takes place by physical filtration, adsorption and microbial action. Wastewater can be released directly into the soil from the base of the peat tanks through holes or removed through a single drainage pipe. GS Concrete supplies both the septic tank and the peat units.

The Shaw Peat Modular on-site wastewater treatment system, or Shaw Peat System for short, provides enhanced treatment of septic tank effluent before the effluent reaches the underlying native soil or is discharged off-site. Shaw Peat Modules are delivered to the site as completely assembled units, ensuring quality control and simplifying construction and inspection. The Shaw Peat Modules may be used for residential and commercial establishments.

The Shaw Peat Modules require an area that is significantly smaller than that of a conventional on-site system. The smaller area required and the ability to place each module in a separate location if desired, preserves the site and reduces site preparation and construction costs.

Primary treatment is provided by use of a septic tank. Effluent from the tank flows by gravity, or by pumping, to a distribution box. The use of flow equalizers in the distribution box ensures the effluent is distributed evenly to the treatment modules. Treatment is provided within the Shaw Peat Modules by physical filtration, adsorption, and microbial activity.

Two types of Shaw Peat Modules are available: the Subsurface Discharge Model and the Off-Site Discharge Model. Both models use high quality precast concrete tanks approximately 10'-9" by 6'-9" in plan and 3'-7" high. Each module will provide treatment of up to 75 gal./day (350 L/day) of septic tank effluent per day. The Subsurface Discharge Model has drainage holes in the bottom and along the lower sides of the tank. These modules are placed on a base of free draining granular stone that has a minimum depth of 150mm and is sized for the long-term acceptance rate of the underlying native soil. This base material provides an area for the treated water to spread out and infiltrate the underlying soil.

The Off-Site Discharge Model is identical to the Subsurface Discharge Model with the exception that there are no drainage holes in the tank. This model contains an under-drain pipe for discharge of the treated effluent off-site.
